The National Pacific Media Trust (NPMT), operating as Pacific Media Network (PMN), and the National Broadcasting Corporation of Papua New Guinea (NBC PNG) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance regional collaboration and strengthen Pacific public service media.
The agreement sets a framework for content sharing, talent development, and co-production initiatives. This collaboration is specifically designed to leverage regional relationships to amplify the content, cultural connection, and professional development that directly benefit Pacific people in Aotearoa New Zealand, while allowing content to reach the wider Pacific region. Both parties share a common mission to inform, educate, and entertain their audiences while preserving and promoting Pacific cultures and languages.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to empowering our primary beneficiaries—Pacific communities in Aotearoa, specifically our Melanesian population who speak Tok Pisin, Pidgin or Bislama—through access to high-quality, culturally relevant media that strengthens their identity and regional knowledge,” said Don Mann, Chief Executive Officer, Pacific Media Network and The National Pacific Media Trust.
“By working with key broadcasters like NBC PNG, we can better source and share content that reinforces the cultural confidence of Pacific New Zealanders, in line with our Deed of Trust.”
Under the MOU, the two organisations will collaborate on projects, which, while regional in scope, are focused on advancing NPMT’s domestic charitable purpose:
– News and content exchange, including reciprocal sharing of news, current affairs, and cultural programming to enrich the PMN offering for NZ audience.
– Media training and capacity building, with joint workshops, exchange programs, and digital expertise sharing, specifically to develop a pipeline of Pacific broadcasters in New Zealand.
– Co-productions and special features that highlight Pacific heritage, regional challenges, and success stories, offering immersive storytelling for the New Zealand Pacific community.
– Joint rights acquisition to secure major media rights and improve collective bargaining power for content distribution to national network.
NBC PNG Managing Director Kora Nou welcomed the agreement, stating: “This partnership strengthens our ability to connect Pacific communities through stories that matter. It’s a strategic step towards building a more unified and resilient Pacific media landscape.”
Nou said: “I am also encouraged by the intent and added focus of the MoU on the younger generation of our Pacific region.”
A joint working group will oversee the implementation of specific projects under the MOU. While the agreement is non-binding, it provides a solid foundation for future collaboration and is valid for an initial term of three years.
