After nearly 21 years in afternoons at Hubbard Rock 97.9 KUPD Phoenix, Fitz Madrid has exited as afternoon host.
Madrid joined KUPD in January 2005 after previously holding roles as APD/afternoon host WJBX Fort Myers, Program Director of WKRO Daytona Beach, KEDG Las Vegas and KWHL Anchorage, and on-air at KIOZ and XHRM San Diego. He also programs multiple channels including Hard Rock, Rock Hits and Video Game Music for streaming service LiveOne.
Madrid posted, “My time at KUPD has come to a close. I have immensely enjoyed our time together. Spending the last few years goofing off on the radio with you guys has been a secret joy for me. Which, I understand, may seem like a counterintuitive. But it’s true. For all the out loud stuff on the air and public facing nonsense the real reward was feeling your friendship, good humor, and generosity. My whole life, I’ve always felt like an outsider. And being on the radio was a way for me to connect with a world I never could quite understand. Watching you guys be you is why I do it. And I’ll continue to. The most remarkable change in my field is that in losing a job, I no longer have to say goodbye to you. We can, if we want, still gab on facebook, IG, wherever however. And that makes me happy. I would miss you terribly. There is no crash out. There is no bad blood. Getting laid off is just a part of the life I’ve chosen and I have no regrets. My time at KUPD was nothing but face cards and I deeply appreciate the guys I worked with and for at Hubbard. And the best part, as always, has been you. Thank you. We’ll talk soon. And no: you rock.”
