Global launches video-first podcasts and sports entertainment arm

Global has unveiled major expansion plans, launching a new video-first podcast division and a dedicated sports entertainment arm at its first-ever Audio & Entertainment Upfronts in London.

Group CEO Simon Pitts officially launched Global Studios, a new creative division bringing together video-led podcasting, branded entertainment, and multi-platform campaigns across Global’s radio, digital, and outdoor networks.
Simon said expanding into video was a “natural next step” for Global. “The lines between audio and video are blurring rapidly, with audiences and brands increasingly expecting integrated experiences,” he told advertisers.
He confirmed Global and The Fellas Studios will work together to create new creator-led media brands, uniting talent, premium production and Global’s data and marketing reach.

The event also saw the launch of Sport by Global, a new division focusing on branded entertainment and partnerships in sport. Following collaborations with Team GB, Wimbledon, McLaren and SailGP, the new initiative aims to connect athletes, rights holders and advertisers through entertainment and storytelling.

Chief Commercial Officer Mike Gordon said: “With the launch of Sport by Global, we’re extending our entertainment expertise into one of the most powerful cultural spaces — top class sport.
With a weekly reach of over 52 million people, we can amplify huge events and help rights holders connect with audiences in new ways.”
Global also revealed a new data and effectiveness platform, Global:IQ, combining first-party data, analytics and AI-driven tools to give advertisers real-time insights into campaign performance.
Simon Pitts said the platform would “prove the impact of every pound advertisers spend,” while Mike added it would give brands “real confidence in what works — and what could work even better.”
A new narrative podcast series hosted by Emily Maitlis, focused on the infected blood scandal, was also announced as part of Global’s growing podcast slate.
The event was introduced by the Capital Breakfast team Jordan North, Chris Stark, and Sian Welby.

GenX Radio Suffolk marks 50 years since Radio Orwell launch

GenX Radio Suffolk will return to the birthplace of commercial radio in Suffolk to celebrate 50 years since Radio Orwell first went on air.

The station will broadcast live from Electric House in Ipswich on Tuesday 28 October, marking half a century since Radio Orwell began transmissions from the same building in 1975.
The special edition of the James Hazell Morning Show, airing from 9am to midday, will bring together former presenters and staff from Radio Orwell to share memories of the pioneering station.
Among those taking part will be Nick Coady, Nigel Renie, Stephen (Foz) Foster, Phil Archer, Graham Bannerman, Mark Wesley and Patrick Eade.
Radio Orwell first broadcast on 257 metres medium wave and quickly became part of Ipswich life, providing local news, information and entertainment for listeners across Suffolk.
It was one of the original 19 Independent Local Radio stations created by the Independent Broadcasting Authority in the 1970s, following the relaxation of broadcasting rules in the UK.
James Hazell, now Managing Director of GenX Radio Suffolk, said: “As the last ever voice on Radio Orwell, I’m proud to return to Electric House — the home of Orwell — to present a special programme marking the station’s 50th anniversary.
“We’ll reflect on the remarkable impact Radio Orwell had on Suffolk and how GenX Radio Suffolk — often called ‘Radio Orwell 2’ — is carrying that legacy forward, keeping genuine local radio alive in the county.”

QVC partners with Magic Radio to support midlife wellbeing

Bauer Media has partnered with multichannel retailer QVC to promote midlife wellbeing through a new sponsorship on Mellow Magic.

Running from September to December, QVC becomes the official sponsor of Mellow Magic, the station hosted by Nicki Chapman that focuses on relaxation and self-care. The collaboration aligns with Menopause Awareness Month, aiming to reframe conversations around menopause and midlife health.
As part of the campaign, QVC is also sponsoring Mellow Musings — Nicki’s daily segment sharing positive reflections and insights. Bauer says the partnership supports a shared goal between both brands to connect with audiences through warmth and empathy.
Beyond radio, the partnership will extend to a social content series across Magic and Greatest Hits Radio, featuring well-known Bauer presenters discussing their own experiences of menopause, confidence, and managing stress.
Three co-branded articles will also appear on *Grazia*’s website, supported by QVC’s network of menopause experts offering advice and confidence-boosting tips for women in midlife.
Claire Foster, Bauer Media’s Commercial Chief Operating Officer, said radio provides a powerful connection with listeners. “With Mellow Magic and our broader portfolio, we’re creating the perfect platform for QVC to spark open, honest conversations about midlife wellbeing,” she said.
Caroline Cornabe, Commercial Director at QVC UK, added that the collaboration strengthens QVC’s commitment to supporting women in midlife. “We’re empowering them with tools, products and expert advice to approach this life stage with confidence,” she said.
The campaign will also use Bauer’s Illuminate targeting platform to reach women over 45 with an interest in beauty, wellness, and self-care.

Heart 80s presenter Simon Beale recovering after heart attack

Heart 80s Breakfast presenter Simon Beale has shared that he is recovering at home after suffering a major heart attack three weeks ago.

Simon revealed that the incident happened while walking his dog, describing it as a “massive shock” after being rushed to hospital and undergoing emergency surgery to fit two stents in a completely blocked artery.
He said: “Within a couple of hours, I’d had two stents fitted in the main artery at the front of my heart, which was completely blocked. I’d gone from a normal Monday to being blue-lighted in an ambulance, having life-saving surgery and starting the long road to recovery.”
Simon, who is 53, praised the NHS for their care, adding: “The NHS were phenomenal. The care I received was exceptional and I am beyond thankful to every doctor, nurse, consultant, specialist and hospital worker who looked after me for 8 nights. They saved my life. They are true heroes.”
He also thanked his family, friends and colleagues at Heart and Global for their kindness and support during his recovery.
Now back at home, Simon says he is adjusting to a new routine and medication while taking things one day at a time. “I’ve still got a way to go, but I am on the mend and slowly making progress, hoping to be back at work soon,” he said.
Listeners and colleagues from across the radio industry have been sending messages of love and support, wishing him a full and speedy recovery.
