Doug Podell will retire from afternoons at iHeartMedia Classic Rock 106.7 WLLZ Detroit on Friday, December 5.
Podell, nicknamed ‘The Doc of Rock’, will wrap up a 50 year radio career that began in Detroit in 1975 hosting weekend overnights at 99.5 WABX. Six months later he moved to “W4” 106.7 WWWW until its 1981 flip to Country. Following a year as Music Director at KQRS Minneapolis, Podell returned home to Detroit to program the original incarnation of WLLZ on 98.7. He would then move to Cleveland to serve as Operations Manager and afternoon host at Classic Rock 98.5 WNCX from 1990 to 1995 before returning to Detroit as Operations Manager at Rock 101.1 WRIF for fifteen years before moving to host at sister Classic Rock 94.7 WCSX from 2009 to 2017. He joined 106.7 WLLZ at its launch in March 2019. Podell also previously hosted Westwood One’s syndicated “Live In Concert”.
He commented, “It’s been an incredible ride. From my earliest days at WABX to returning to WLLZ, where I first took on a leadership role, it feels like the perfect place to sign off. I’ve been lucky to spend 50 years doing what I love, in the city I love, surrounded by listeners who made it all worth it.”
WLLZ Program Director Casey Krukowski added, “Doug Podell is a Detroit original. His passion for music, deep connection with listeners, and commitment to radio excellence have left a lasting mark—not only on this station, but on generations of Detroit rock fans. We are honored that he chose to conclude his legendary run right here at WLLZ.”
