Mason’s Observations On Listener Responses To Current Hits

While wrapping up the Super Bowl hype and still seeing lots of songs and artists surging in popularity from the Grammy’s, I thought this would be a great time to share some of the valuable insights we’ve gotten from listeners. This is a unique asset we can share, since few if any radio stations today take and tabulate requests. Because Liveline receives actual direct listener input from 500+ requests weekly from a broad base of listeners all over the country, we get a good sense of the songs that are blowing up (and those that aren’t) frequently before most stations even start playing them.  Plus we can spot re-emerging throwbacks each week which we share in the “Buried Treasures” section below. We always try to get a story or opinion out of every caller on why they love a particular song. When people request new or forgotten songs, it’s a great way to sell to the wide audience it so they will enjoy and sit through it.  […]

Listening to One-Share Radio Stations

I’ve had a lot of fun listening to the radio today. I’ve been listening to radio stations that are at a 1 share, or below, in Nielsen PPM markets. Often, when Radioinsight prints the monthly ratings, I make a point of catching up with the top-rated stations or biggest gainers. When the Holiday ratings book came back, I did something different. Radio reigns supreme as the world’s biggest music platform

New research from Radiomonitor shows that radio remains the dominant music platform, outpacing streaming services in audience reach.

In Europe, radio provides five times the exposure of Spotify, rising to 48 times in markets like Nigeria.
Spotify’s top track of 2024, Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter, had 1.6 billion streams globally, while UK radio alone played it 1.3 billion times.
Beautiful Things by Benson Boone had 120 million Spotify UK streams but 1.8 billion UK radio listens.
Weekly chart comparisons highlight radio’s edge. In the UK (week 6, 2025), Spotify’s top song had 3.6 million streams, whereas the top radio track had 51.4 million listens. The average top 200 radio song is heard 10 times more than its Spotify equivalent.
Radiomonitor’s data confirms this trend globally, with Radio Multiples (RM) showing radio outperforms streaming in all examined countries. Even in markets where streaming is strong, radio remains the leading platform for music exposure.
Beyond numbers, radio’s curated programming and presenter-led context drive streams, downloads, and concert ticket sales. With live music revenues far exceeding recorded music, radio’s impact is more significant than ever.
A No. 1 on the Radiomonitor airplay chart signifies the most listened-to song across all platforms combined.
