24 years on: How radio news has changed since 9/11

In 2001, landline phones were (still) a thing. So were answering machines. Cutting edge indeed. It was through these devices that – on this day 24 years ago – I first learned of a horrific situation unfolding in New York. Roused from a deep sleep by a warbling message from a radio newsroom colleague, I… Read More

Mason’s Observations on “SWAG II”, “Tears”, “Jealous Type” & “Man I Need”

Justin Bieber – “SWAG II”: Another surprise release, astonishingly better than the preceding album from July 11. With an additional 23 tracks, almost all of which were better than every song on the first “SWAG”, there are a few major potential hits which would be great follow ups to “DAISIES” (#5 on Top 40/#19 on Spotify) and the now-trending “YUKON” (#42 on Top 40/#47 on Spotify). Check out tracks “SPEED DEMON” (my personal favorite) “EYE CANDY”, “I THINK YOU’RE SPECIAL” and “LOVE SONG”, likely the next single based off the fact it was the first track on New Music Friday last week. It’s also the most streamed of them all so far. […]

Greatest Hits Radio launches new Superstars season with Bowie special

Greatest Hits Radio is bringing back its Superstars series this month, starting with a special on David Bowie.

The new season begins on Sunday 14 September and will explore the careers of some of music’s most influential performers, including Queen, John Lennon, Pink Floyd and Duran Duran. Each episode features rare recordings, interviews and stories behind the songs that defined different eras.
The first documentary focuses on David Bowie, timed ahead of the release of his final box set ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away’. Narrated by Jackie Brambles and produced by Gimme Sugar Productions, the programme charts Bowie’s impact on pop culture across the 70s, 80s and 90s.
It covers highlights such as his Glastonbury 2000 performance, the 2002 album Heathen, the challenge of balancing new material with a huge back catalogue, and his final record Blackstar in 2016. Archive interviews with Bowie himself feature alongside contributions from long-time collaborator Tony Visconti, PR Alan Edwards and bassist Gail Ann Dorsey.
Jackie Brambles guides listeners through the story with Bowie’s music providing the soundtrack. The series continues with weekly episodes celebrating other legendary artists whose work continues to resonate with generations of listeners.
