FCC Report 7/28: Pair Of Translators Fined For Very Late License Renewals

FCC Actions
The FCC has issued Notices of Apparent Liability For Forfeiture to a pair of translator licensees for failing to timely file license renewal applications.

A $6500 penalty has been proposed against Marion Williams’ 105.5 W288DU Canton MS. W288DU was required to file its renewal application by February 3, 2020 ahead of its June 1 license expiration. It did not do so until April 4, 2024 multiple years after the fact. The commission states that a base forfeiture is $3000 for failing to file a required form and $10,000 for extended periods of unauthorized operation. It wad cut in half for being a secondary service as a translator.

The same amount was levied against Carolina University’s 94.7 W234CZ Chattanooga TN. W234CZ was supposed to file its renewal application by April 1, 2020 ahead of its August 1 expiration. The renewal was then filed on February 16, 2024.

Pirate Actions
Shaniko Corporation was issued a Notice of Pirate Radio Broadcasting warning the property owner that a pirate station was operating from their premises and warning of penalties of up to $2,391,097. The station was first noticed by the FCC in September 2023, and would file an application for an LPFM later that year. The station and its associated music store was spotlighted by KGW-TV Portland last week.

License Cancellations
The FCC has cancelled the license of Western Slope Communications’ 690 KRGS Rifle CO. The commission sent the licensee a letter in February noting that their records had indicated the station had been silent since July 2022, which Western Slope failed to respond to.
